Minutes of the WMTS' Delegates' 41st Meeting, August 24, 2011, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic

Call to Order. Dr. Miroslav Ondrej, President, called the meeting to order. He introduced new delegates and alternate delegates. These were Dr. Cesar Villaran, Peru, Dr. Riikka Mattila, for Dr. Hernberg, Finland, Dr. Jorg Klocke, for Dr. Groell, Germany, and Dr. Mary Hallowell, Canada for Dr. Szezerbowski, Dr. Shunei Tomita, Japan, for Dr. Higashi. Dr. Manion, Executive Secretary, was present.

Approval of Minutes of Last Meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were approved without additions or corrections.

Past WMTS Presidents and Delegates in Attendance. Bartolo Bresciano, Italy; Yosef Davidovitch, Israel; Stanislav Fetisov, Estonia; Jorg Klocke, Germany; Eric Gultom, Indonesia; Lars Hagberg, Sweden; Willy Halim, Netherlands; Riikka Mattila, Finland; Shunei Tomita, Japan; Jan Kirchner, Czech Republic; Almos Klekner, Hungary; Ioan Muresan, Romania; Miroslav Ondrej, Slovakia; Gusse Oxelius, Sweden; Phong Nguyen, USA; Vincenzo Sciacca, Italy; Juraj Sninsky, Slovakia; Petter Stromme, Norway; Mary Hallowell, Canada; Egils Valeinis, Latvia; Cesar Villaran, Peru; C.P. Wen, Taiwan; Marcin Wronski, Poland; Zdravko Milkovic, Croatia.

Succession of Presidents. Dr. Ondrej spoke of his enjoyable two years as President, and he "turned the gavel over" to Dr. Valeinis, our new WMTS President. Dr. Valeinis' enthusiasm and past excellent work on behalf of WMTS indicate he is a very good choice for the presidential office.

New Vice President. Dr. Manion spoke on behalf of the Nominating Committee's work in the past year. Every delegate who responded suggested Dr. Jan Kirchner as the next VP. The Committee then sent an email to delegates to ask for Dr. Kirchner's becoming VP by acclamation. Delegates agreed to this. Dr. Kirchner was formally voted in at the meeting.

Report of Meeting, Dr. Kirchner. There were 232 registrants and 188 tennis players. 24 countries were represented. $5 for each registrant will be sent to Dr. Hernberg in Finland to be added to the WMTS account. He noted the number of registrants is lower than in previous years; if 10 or 20 more would have registered, it would have been easier to meet expenses. He commented on the high quality of the scientific sessions.

WMTS Savings Account. Dr. Hernberg's written report was accepted. There are 2,824.45 Euros in the account-before the KV contribution.

By-Laws Addition. During the tennis program there was a trial of a "match tie-breaker" for all of the matches, i.e., if sets were tied 1 and 1 apiece, then the "3rd set" for all matches would be a 10-point tie-breaker. This was very well received by the players. At the delegates' meeting a new by-law has been adopted to have a "match tie-breaker" for all matches in the future. (I have added this to the Constitution.)

Upcoming Meetings.
---Cervia, Italy, September 22-28, 2012. Dr. Vincenzo Sciacca, President of AMTI, presented information. He made it sound very appealing. So much of the organizing has been done already. Brochures were presented. Also, detailed information can be found on our website: wmtstennis.org (Here's a reminder of the passwords: wmts mccampbell.) One can also look at a separate website: www.amti.it/wmts.
---Jurmala, Latvia, outside of Riga. 2013. Dates not definitely determined, but probably early in the summer, perhaps June 29-July 5. Dr. Egils Valeinis showed slides of the courts and nearby beaches. The tennis court numbers are more than adequate, and major tournaments have been held there. There is still a remote chance that a beautiful tennis center will be constructed in Riga by that time.
---Bali Hai, Indonesia, 2014. Dr. Eric Gultom has offered to host WMTS again. (I talked to a number of players who attended Bali Hai the last time, and they said everything about the meeting was exceptional. That meeting was not well-attended because there had been a recent terrorist attack.)
---Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2015. Dr. Willy Halim will be the main organizer. During KV, two representatives of the agency in Rotterdam came and listened to many of us who have had experience in staging a meeting.
---(Dr. Cesar Villaran, Peru, has told me of his interest in bringing WMTS to South America where WMTS has never been before. The travel to Lima would be expensive, but the costs of hotels, restaurants, registrations would be low. So maybe we'll get to Peru in some years.)

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, James L. Manion, M.D.

Excerpts from Dr. Stanley McCampbell's, "My Memoirs of The World Medical Tennis Society," written in 1991.

"To me it has been a great honor to know and enjoy the friendship of doctors from around the world. It has been the most exciting experience of my life. Doctors... can be assured that if they travel thousands of miles to meetings, they will be certain of a warm welcome, well-organized tournaments and scientific sessions, and a grand, good time. It is an opportunity, unequalled, as far as I know, of enjoying the friendship of interesting, fun loving, sportsman-like doctors who will be friends for life. I would certainly like to do it all over again."
